Open the model image in photoshop.
Then, go to image > image size. Set the size of the image as the one in the screenshot below:
Now duplicate the model image two times, do this by hitting the short keys Ctrl+J, there will be the other two layer in the layer panel : layer 1 and layer 1 copy.
Select the layer 1 to activate it, then convert it into a smart object layer. Do this by going to layer > smart objects > convert to smart object. When the layer is converted, there will be a smart object icon on the lower right corner of the layer.
With the layer 1 still activated, go to filter > blur > Gaussian blur. This will give some blurry effect to the image. Set the value of the blur to the one shown in the screenshot.
When a smart object layer is given any filter, the filter will be smart filter for the layer indicated by a mask thumbnail below it in the layer panel. Then, select the mask thumbnail and mask the model to hide the effect of the blur filter.
Now select the layer 1 copy, we need to invert the layer. To do this, hit the short keys Ctrl+I. Then, after being inverted, convert this layer into a smart object layer as the previous layer 1. Finally, set this layer to overlay blending at 85% opacity.
With the layer 1 copy still selected, go to filter > other > high pass. This will give this layer high pass filter, set the value as the one in the screenshot below. Note: this amount of high pass filter is the one for the model image with the resolution set for this tutorial. This amount might not give the best result for the other different sized images. All we have to do is to adjust the radius amount for the best desired result if we use the other different images with different resolutions.
Here is the result should look like so far….
Finally, give the layer 1 copy a layer mask by going to layer > layer mask > reveal all. Mask the whole background of the image, the model’s hair and some areas on the model’s lips and eyes.
