Step 1 – THE New Document and Background

Let’s Start by opening Photoshop and create a new document, I choose 500x500px with a transparent background. Next fill the background with a colour, I choose to go with a yellow background.

Step 2 – New Dot Pattern

In this step we’ll create the pattern with some dots, select the Ellipse Tool (U) and with a pink/red colour create a perfect circle of 200px diameter (hold the shift key while drawing the circle). Place this circle in the centre of the canvas.

Duplicate the circle layer we just created 4 times, then place the circle a each corners, make sure the centre of the circle is positioned on the corner.

Now we have the pattern, we’re going to save it, go to Select – All, to select all the canvas, then Edit – Define Pattern. Name it like you want and click OK.

Step 3 – Test

To test or use the pattern on a creation, I created a A4 format canvas, then to use the pattern go to Layer – New Fill Layer – Pattern and select the pattern we just created. You can change the scale right now, you’ll be able to change the scale when you want just double clicking on the small preview on the pattern layer in the Layers window.

That’s it for this quick tip, the result is simple but you can create more elaborate patterns using those techniques. Feel free to leave a comment or share you patterns.
