In this Photoshop Tutorial, I will show you how to create a ghost fantasy scene manipulation in photoshop.

Final Result Preview:

Step 1:

From this step on to step 14 we will manipulate the snow ghost from the provided picture. First of all, open the picture in photoshop.

Step 2:

In this step we will extract the model on the picture from its background. I used pen tool (P) to do this.

Select pen tool in the tool panel and then zoom in (Ctrl + +) the picture. With pen tool still selected, click the edge of the horse to make a starting anchor point and keep on clicking to trace the picture. Each click will create the other anchor point indicated by a tiny square. (1)

Proceed to trace the picture until the path is closed indicated by thin line around the traced picture (2)

When the path is closed, right click on the path. There will be an option command box, choose make selection to select the path (3)

Make sure that now the path is selected, then inverse the selection (Shift+Ctrl+I). Finally hit Del to delete the background (4).

Step 3:

Now it is time to manipulate the ghost. I started from the rear legs of the horse. First fill (Shift+F5) the transparent background with any color you want. I used light blue color.

Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N). Select Rectangular Marquee Tool in the tool panel and make selection like the one I created (1)

Fill the selection (Shift+F5) with white and then hit Ctrl+D to deselect (2)

Next give this layer a layer mask. Make sure to set the foreground color to black. Select the Gradient tool in the tool panel and choose Linear Gradient. Make sure to use foreground to transparent gradient to make a part of this layer transparent (3).

Step 4:

Hit Ctrl+T to activate free transform tool. Wrap the shape to cover the leg. Proceed to cover the other side of the leg. To see the result, click the eye icon next to the horse layer to hide it. Now the leg looks transparent.

Step 5:

Continue to cover the other leg. Please see step 3-4 for this purpose.

Step 6:

Finishing the entire rear legs. Still I used the same techniques as the ones in step 3-4.

Step 7:

Remember to refer back to step 3-4 to make the front legs transparent.

Step 8:

After making the legs transparent, I began to work on the horse’s body. I started from rear part of the body :

Create another new layer. With pen tool, make selection on part of the horse body and fill the selection with white (1)

Give this layer a layer mask. Make sure to set the foreground color to black and then take Brush tool in the tool panel. With a very soft round brush (0% hardness) at very low opacity ( 10-15%), stroke area on the body (2)

Keep on stroking to make it more transparent (3)

Follow the highlight and shading on the original picture to get the result as the one I created (4).

Step 9:

Proceed to work on the other part of the body. See the result I created :

Step 10:

Please refer back again to step 8 to work on the model.
