In this Photshop Tutorial, we’ll learn how to create vibrant heart bokeh effect wallpaper using a few filters, and creating a custom brush.
Open up Photoshop and create a new document, mine is 1440x900px with a transparent background. rename the layer «Background 1» and fill it with a dark grey colour #1E1E1E, Edit - Fill - Color and enter this color then add a Gradient Overlay on the «Background 1» layer with two dark colour #1E1E1E - #1F1F1F and those parameters
Create a new layer, rename it «Background 2», fill it with White, Edit - Fill - White, apply an other Gradient Overlay layer style on this layer going from #E83484 - #CE5449 with those parameters:
Place the «Background 2» layer in a new Group, name this group «Background 2» and change its Blending Mode to Overlay.
In this step we’ll create the Heart Brush for the bokeh effect, create a new 500x500px document with a transparent background, then select the Custom Shape Tool (U), select the Heart shape in the Shape library in the toolbar. Create a heart shape in the centre of the canvas.
Change the Fill of this shape to 50% and add a Black Stroke Layer Style on the heart shape with a size of 5px, Inside for the position and Overlay for the Blend Mode.
Select all the canvas, Select - All then got to Edit - Define Brush Preset and save this shape as a brush, I named it «Bokeh Heart Brush».
Before using this brush we’ll need to customize it a little more, open the Brush Panel, Window - Brush, select the brush we created at the end of the list and add those parameters, don’t forget to save the brush when you’re done by clicking on the bottom right icon in the brush panel.
Now we have our custom brush, let’s go back to the main wallpaper document, select the Brush Tool (B), select our new custom brush, and white for the colour, then create a new layer and paint some hearts on the whole canvas, when you like the result, place this hearts layer in a new group named «Bokeh Hearts» and change the Blend Mode of this group to Color Dodge.
Let’s add some blur on those hearts, go to Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur with a 20px radius. Change the Fill of the blur heart to 50%.
Create a new layer in the same group, paint some more hearts on the whole canvas using the Brush Tool. Add some Gaussian Blur on these hearts to but this time with a 5px radius. Change the Fill of this layer to 75%.
Create a new layer in the same group, paint some more hearts on the whole canvas using the Brush Tool. This time we’ll apply the High Pass filter on those hearts, go to Filter - Other - High Pass with a 5px radius. Change the Blend Mode of this layer to Color Dodge and its Fill to 50%.
After creating the Blur Hearts let’s create the foreground bokeh hearts, create a new layer, still in the «Bokeh Hearts» group and paint some more Hearts on the canvas.
Create a Layer Mask on this new layer, select the Gradient Tool (G) with a black to white gradient and create a gradient on the layer mask going from the bottom to 35% of the canvas.
Duplicate the layer we just worked on, place the new one under the original, then apply a Motion Blur filter, Filter - Blur - Motion Blur with a distance of 100px and a 0° angle. Change the Fill of this layer to 20%.
Create a new layer in the same group, select the Brush Tool (B) with a big soft rounded brush and a white colour, paint on the right and left sides of the canvas, play with the opacity of the brush, I changed the opacity of the brush between 25 and 35%. Create a new layer in the same group, with the same brush, paint on some parts of the canvas to highlight some hearts
In this step we’ll add two Adjustment layers, for the first add a Brightness and Contrast Adjustment from the Adjustment panel, Window - Adjustments with a Brightness of 25 and a Contrast of 20.
For the second add a Selective Color Adjustment, select Reds and add those parameters:
That’s it for this tutorial, I hope you’ve learned new trick or tips creating this vibrant wallpaper. Feel free to leave a comment and share your creations.
