In this tutorial we will create a beautiful red Christmas background from scratch using Photoshop CS5.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop. Create a new layer and fill the background with black color.

Step 2

Now right click this layer and choose blending options, then apply Satin Effect. The values are as shown in the image below.

Now apply Gradient Overlay. The settings are as shown in following the image.

Step 3

Now select the Custom Shape Tool. Select the snowflake vectors. We have 3 snowflakes vectors. Select this snowflake and draw the snowflakes randomly using different sizes. Make sure the foreground color is white and the opacity is set to 100 %. You will get this image as shown below.

Step 4

I got 22 shapes in this way using step 3. Group these 22 shapes into 1 group by selecting these 22 shapes and pressing CTRL-G. You can see this in the below image.

Step 5

Now duplicate group 1. You will get the layer name as group 1 copy. Apply Outer Glow to this layer. The settings are shown below.

Step 6

Now similarly duplicate group 1 copy and place randomly the snowflakes. I have named this layer as group 3 and placed below group 1 copy layer. Apply Outer Glow to this layer. The settings are as shown.

Step 7

Now similarly create group 2 layer by duplicating other layers. I have placed this below group 3 layer. Set the Blending Mode of this layer to Overlay. You will get the below image.

Step 8

Now go to Blending Options of group 2 and apply Drop Shadow to this layer. The settings are as shown.

Step 9

Now apply Gradient Overlay to group 2. The settings are shown below.

Step 10

You must get this image after all these steps from 1 to 9.

Apply Vibrance. The settings are shown below.

Step 12

Apply Photo Filter. The settings are as shown below.
