Step 1 – The New Document, Base, Lines and Shadow

Start by opening Illustrator and create a new document, I choose the 500x500px.

Let’s create the base of the icon, Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool with a 20px corner radius, to enter the corner radius option, just click on the canvas, this will open the option panel of this tool. Add a gradient on this shapes with orange colours, I used #f49222 and #feb715.

Select the Pen Tool (P) create 3 vertical lines, one on the middle and two on each side with a 1px black stoke.

Next, still with the Pen Tool, we’ll create the tale on top of the pumpkin creating two shapes, both with green colours, I used #6dce32 and #b5dc1f. Add a 1px stroke line between those two shapes.

Let’s add some highlight on this icon, select the Ellipse Tool (U) to create a big circle in the centre of the base shape. Add a Radial Gradient on this circle, with two white colours, change the opacity of the white colour on the right to 0%. Change the blend mode of this shape to soft light and its opacity to 75%.

Step 2 – Eyes

Create two circle shapes using the Ellipse Tool, one bigger than the other. Add a Radial Gradient on those circles with two dark grey colours # 58595b and # 404041.

Create a smaller white circle in the eye, create a tiny circle on the top of this shape. Select both circle shapes we just created, and click Minus Front in the Pathfinder panel.

Create two new dark grey circle in the eye. When you like the result, duplicate the white circle with the two small grey circles and place the duplicated shapes on the right eye.

Step 3 – Eye Shadow

Let’s add some depth to the eyes, duplicate twice the big gradient grey circle of the eye on the left, then select one of the duplicated circle shape and move it on the bottom left, when that’s done, select the two duplicated circle layers and click on Minus Front in the Pathfinder panel. Change the colour of this new shape to a dark grey colour. Repeat the same process for the other eye.

Step 4 – Mouth

To finish this icon, select the Pen Tool (P) and create the mouth with a few teeth. Add the same dark grey radial gradient than on the eyes. Next with the Pen Tool and a grey colour create some depth in the mouth with a few shapes between the teeth.

Final Result

Here we are with a nice pumpkin icon you can use as an avatar, an icon or in any webdesign project. I hope you’ve learned a few tricks. Feel free to share your creations and leave a comment.
