In this tutorial we are going to make a pendant lamp with 3D Studio Max. This time, I am going to use NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) which is very powerful but rarely used among 3D Studio Max users, it is used to generate and represent curves and surfaces. If you've never used NURBS before, then do not worry because I'll explain all steps clearly.

Final Result Preview

Step 1

Create a Sphere in the scence. The size and the number of its segments depends on the size of your lamp.

Step 2

Right click on the Sphere and select Convert to NURBS from Convert To.

From NURBS toolbox click on Create Point Curve On Surface. With this tool you can draw curve on the sphere object.

Step 4

Start creating a curve line around the sphere surface. To rotate your scene while drawing you can use keyboard shortkey "Alt + Mouse middle button". If this did not work for you, just change short key in your 3DS Max setup.

Step 5

At the end Right Click to exit from drawing mode.

Step 6

In the modifier stack, select Curve and from Curve Common rollout choose All connected curves. Now you can click on the curve and select it.

Step 7

Click on Detach button and from its setting, uncheck Relational option. You can choose a name for this curve as well.

Step 8

Now you can move out this curve and delete Sphere object.

Step 9

Next step is to make it renderable. This all done in Rendering rollout of the curve in modifier panel. Check both Enable in Renderer and Enable in viewport. Then you can change its thickness and sides. Keep in mind, If you could not see thickness in your viewport, it is probably because you are not using OpenGl as display driver in 3ds max. But you can always see result while rendering.

Step 10

The last step is to duplicate it. make other copies and rotate them to make random position. in my final renders I have used one curve and duplicate it 4 times. Rotate them around center.
